Description
The 2M Black is part of Ortofon's 2M range, a line of moving magnet (MM) cartridges developed to offer an extended frequency response and faithful musical reproduction. It is fitted to a turntable tonearm and converts the record's grooves into an electrical signal intended for a phono preamplifier.
This cartridge uses a diamond cut to a Shibata profile, a stylus tip that follows the groove more precisely than conventional profiles. This technical choice allows for detailed reproduction across the sound spectrum and good tonal fidelity. The treble register benefits from an extended and well-controlled response, while the symmetry between the two stereo channels and the low level of distortion contribute to a precise soundstage.
This type of cartridge is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts with a turntable and tonearm of sufficient quality to make the most of its potential, as well as a phono preamplifier suited to MM models. The Shibata diamond profile also requires careful adjustment of azimuth and tracking force to perform at its best.

What to check before buying used
The cantilever suspension, either Elliptical Line Contact or Shibata depending on the version, softens with age and alters the optimal tracking force setting: inspecting the diamond's sides under a loupe helps identify wear or misalignment invisible to the naked eye. Also check the condition of the connection wires and mounting pins, often weakened by repeated removal of the headshell. A genuine Ortofon replacement stylus remains preferable to a generic copy, which noticeably degrades playback of the Shibata profile.
