Description
The Concorde 5E is a moving magnet (MM) cartridge from Ortofon, using the integrated Concorde format where the cartridge body extends directly into the headshell mount. It is designed to fit a turntable equipped with a Concorde-standard connector, without requiring a separate headshell.
The stylus is elliptical, mounted on an aluminium cantilever, with a tip radius r/R of 8/18 μm. This tip profile follows the modulations cut into the groove more finely than a conical tip, resulting in better detail retrieval, particularly in the treble. The cartridge features four coils on split pole pieces, wound with oxygen-free copper (OFC) wire, for an output voltage of 4 mV at 1000 Hz.
In terms of stated performance, the frequency response extends from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at ±3 dB, with channel separation of 22 dB and channel balance of 2 dB at 1 kHz, at 1000 Hz. The lateral dynamic compliance of 20 μm/mN, combined with a recommended tracking force of 1.8 g, sets out a precise adjustment that must be respected to preserve groove tracking and limit wear on both the record and the stylus.

What to check before buying used
Check the condition of the elliptical tip and aluminium cantilever with a magnifying glass: wear or misalignment results in harsh treble or a loss of channel separation. Also check the integrity of the connecting wires and the pins of the Concorde connector, as well as the flexibility of the suspension, which governs the stated compliance of 20 μm/mN. A stylus subjected to excessive strain from an incorrect tracking force setting may also show a flat spot that is invisible to the naked eye but audible when listening.
