Description
The Concorde 5S is a moving magnet (MM) cartridge from Ortofon, designed in the Concorde format that integrates the cartridge body and headshell into a single unit. It is intended for playing vinyl records on turntables fitted with this type of mounting, with a spherical stylus mounted on an aluminium cantilever.
Its output voltage of 4 mV at 1000 Hz allows a good signal level for the phono stage. The spherical stylus, with a tip radius of R 18 µm, offers stable tracking and is less demanding regarding turntable alignment than an elliptical or fine profile. The four coils on split-pole pins, wound in OFC wire (oxygen-free copper), contribute to signal reproduction, with a channel separation of 20 dB and a channel balance of 2 dB at 1 kHz. The frequency response is stated as 20 Hz to 20 kHz at ±3 dB.
The dynamic and lateral compliance of 20 μm/mN, combined with a recommended tracking force of 1.8 g, makes it suited to medium-mass tonearms, common on mainstream turntables fitted with the Concorde mounting. The recommended load resistance is 47 kOhm, for a load capacitance of between 200 and 500 pF.
This cartridge is aimed at a music lover seeking simple, reliable vinyl listening, without the need for fine-tuning or extensive tonearm optimisation. It is suited to everyday use on an entry-level or mid-range system fitted with a Concorde mounting.

What to check before buying used
The R 18 µm spherical tip and the aluminium cantilever deserve inspection under magnification: a flat spot or a warped cantilever indicates an overused cartridge. Check that the stylus has not been replaced with a generic tip incompatible with the Concorde body, and test the channel balance, as a marked imbalance points to worn coils or suspension. The Concorde mounting clip itself must remain rigid, with no play or cracks around the clip.
