What to check before buying used
The elliptical stylus and aluminium cantilever concentrate most of the wear: check for the absence of flat spots on the diamond and lateral play in the suspension, signs of a cartridge nearing the end of its life. The connection wires to the headshell tags must remain intact and properly insulated, as must the rear pins if the body is removable. On an older unit, the internal suspension may also have lost some of its flexibility, which affects groove tracking even without visible wear on the diamond.
