Description
The MC Diamond is a high-end moving coil (MC) cartridge from Ortofon, designed for vinyl record playback on demanding analogue systems. It brings several technical choices originally developed for the brand's most accomplished cartridges into a more accessible model.
The cartridge body is made from titanium using Selective Laser Melting, a process that allows precise control over material density. This control results in high internal damping and a significant reduction in unwanted vibrations, benefiting sound reproduction. The cartridge also incorporates the Ortofon Wide Range Damping (WRD) system, in which a platter disc is sandwiched between two rubber dampers with distinct properties. On the MC Diamond, this rubber compound has been redesigned using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), a formula that improves the balance between flexibility and damping across the entire frequency spectrum while limiting distortion and resonance. The stylus uses an Ortofon Replicant 100 Line Contact diamond, whose narrow, elongated contact surface closely mirrors that of the original cutting stylus, delivering faithful reproduction, reduced distortion and extended bandwidth. The magnetic system combines selected materials and optimised geometry with a non-magnetic armature, for a precise soundstage and good dimensionality.
This cartridge is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts with a quality turntable and tonearm capable of making the most of a high-end moving coil cartridge, as well as systems already fitted with a phono preamplifier suited to MC cartridges.
What to check before buying used
The Replicant 100 diamond stylus and its cantilever remain the most fragile part of this cartridge: check their visual integrity before any use, in particular that the cantilever shows no signs of impact or deformation. The stylus guard supplied by Ortofon should always be in place during mounting, removal or periods when the cartridge is not in use; its absence on a used unit is a sign that the stylus may have been exposed to risky handling. Checking the alignment and wear of the tip, ideally under a magnifying glass or microscope, helps ensure the diamond has not suffered abnormal wear caused by incorrect VTF or azimuth adjustment.
