Description
The MC X40 is a moving coil (MC) cartridge designed by Ortofon, positioned at the top of its X series. It is intended to be fitted to a tonearm for reproducing sound engraved on vinyl records, with the aim of fidelity and precision in groove tracking.
The stylus employs a diamond cut to the Nude Shibata profile, mounted directly on a boron cantilever. This material, stiffer and lighter than aluminium, promotes precise groove tracking with reduced distortion. The tip radius (r/R 6/50 μm) is suited to fine contact with the groove walls. The rubber suspension is designed and manufactured by Ortofon itself, a point that governs the stylus's mechanical behaviour over time.
Electrically, the cartridge delivers an output voltage of 0.4 mV, with an internal DC resistance of 6 Ω and a recommended load resistance greater than 50 Ω: values to be respected for matching with the phono stage used. The winding is based on 4 coils mounted on split pole pieces (2+ and 2-), made of high-purity silver-plated copper. The stated frequency response, 20 Hz to 20 kHz at ± 1 dB, comes with a channel balance of 0.5 dB at 1 kHz and a channel separation of 26 dB at the same frequency.
The recommended tracking force is 2.0 g, and the dynamic lateral compliance is 15 μm/mN, two parameters to be set carefully when installing on the tonearm to preserve tracking accuracy and diamond longevity.

What to check before buying used
The stylus's rubber suspension hardens over time, even without intensive use, which alters mechanical behaviour and therefore groove tracking: a point to check as a priority on an older unit. The Nude Shibata tip and boron cantilever should be examined under magnification to detect any micro-chip or deformation, invisible to the naked eye but audible in the sound. Also check the integrity of the connection wires and pins, which are fragile on this type of low-output cartridge.
