Description
The SPU Meister Silver GM MKII is a moving-coil (MC) cartridge from Ortofon, designed to be fitted to a turntable and reproduce the signal cut into the groove with neutrality, detail and dynamics. It belongs to the SPU cartridge lineage, which first appeared in the 1960s and has since remained a fixture on the turntables of many demanding vinyl enthusiasts.
This model retains the historic architecture of the SPU range while incorporating several developments to the coil winding, magnet and stylus. The coil is made from 99.9999% pure copper (6N), a level of purity that limits losses in the electrical signal generated by the cantilever's movement. The internal wiring, in 99.9999% pure silver (6N), and gold-plated connectors complete this signal transmission chain through to the cartridge's output.
The stylus, of elliptical shape, is mounted on an aluminium cantilever. The assembly is machined using laser technology, intended to ensure a high level of manufacturing precision on very small components. The one-piece chassis combines wood and resin, with damping provided by a highly isolating material, whose role is to limit parasitic vibrations that could otherwise disturb playback.
This cartridge is intended for vinyl enthusiasts already equipped with a high-end turntable, capable of making the most of such a level of finish and materials. It naturally finds its place in a system where the rest of the chain, including the tonearm and phono preamplifier, has been chosen with equal care.
What to check before buying used
The rubber suspension that holds the cantilever in place can harden or crack over time, altering the cartridge's behaviour and warranting a careful left/right channel listening test before purchase. The elliptical stylus and its aluminium cantilever are vulnerable to shocks during fitting or careless handling of the tonearm. Also check the condition of the output wires and gold-plated connectors, as well as the integrity of the wood/resin chassis, which is sensitive to moisture and cracking.
