Description
The Xpression Heritage is a high-end moving coil (MC) cartridge from Ortofon. It follows the template of the brand's SPU models while incorporating technologies derived from the Ortofon MC Winfeld cartridge, of which it represents a recent evolution developed within the brand's research and development laboratories.
Its neodymium magnet is paired with a magnetic field stabilising element, ensuring a high degree of operational stability for the cartridge. This stability translates in practice into optimised channel separation and distortion. The cartridge also incorporates WRD System technology, based on a metal part sandwiched between two sheets of rubber to improve the assembly's damping properties: bandwidth is thereby extended and reproduction gains in linearity.
The diamond used, a Replicant Stylus 100, has been shaped to reproduce the form of the cutting stylus used when creating record masters. It is mounted on a boron cantilever, renowned for its high rigidity. The coil, for its part, is made from 8N (99.999999%) pure monocrystalline OFC copper, a material designed to limit losses during signal transmission.
This cartridge is intended for vinyl enthusiasts with a turntable and tonearm capable of fully exploiting a high-end MC cartridge, as well as a phono preamplifier suited to this type of output. The template inherited from the SPU models also means compatibility should be checked against the headshell or tonearm used.
What to check before buying used
The Replicant Stylus 100 stylus and its boron cantilever require careful visual inspection: a worn tip or a misaligned cantilever will immediately result in a loss of detail and distortion during playback. Also check the suspension holding the cartridge body, as ageing of the WRD System rubber can affect damping and therefore tonearm tracking. The connection pins and aluminium body must be free of oxidation marks or impact damage, which are essential for a reliable electrical contact with the headshell.
