Description
The Magnepan MG .7 is a floorstanding speaker from the Maggie range, based on planar technology. It is installed in a pair within a stereo hi-fi system, replacing conventional speakers with dynamic drivers.
A distinctive feature of this model lies in the ability to orient the speakers in two different ways depending on the desired listening experience. By placing the tweeters facing outward, the sound image remains stable even for a listener seated far from the central axis: the optimal listening area, or sweet spot, is then the widest of the entire Maggie range offered up to this model. Conversely, by orienting the tweeters inward and moving the speakers closer to the centre of the room (toe-in), the listening experience is focused on a more precise listening area, for a listener positioned exactly on axis.
This orientation adjustment therefore allows the speaker to be adapted to two distinct listening configurations, without any additional equipment.
The MG .7 is aimed at hi-fi enthusiasts curious about the particular sound of planar speakers, whether for shared listening with several people spread around a room, thanks to the widened sweet spot, or for very precise individual listening in a narrowed configuration.
What to check before buying used
On this type of planar speaker, the Mylar diaphragm stretched over its frame should be examined under raking light: sagging, a crease or a detached area indicates an impact or exposure to moisture. Also check that both panels respond identically across the full range, as a difference in tension can unbalance the stereo image. The front and rear protective grilles must be present and fixed without play, and the internal connecting cables warrant a visual check at the back of the panel.
