Description
The Monitor 7 V5 is a floorstanding speaker from Paradigm, built around a four-driver configuration spread across two-and-a-half ways. It is designed to be used as the main front speaker in a stereo or home cinema system, aiming for a balanced sound reproduction across a wide frequency range.
The tweeter uses a 25 mm H-PTD dome cooled by ferrofluid, a process that improves heat dissipation and power handling in the upper part of the spectrum. The midrange-woofer is built around a 140 mm M-ICP cone with a 25 mm voice coil and GRIP chassis, while two dedicated woofers use carbon-impregnated polypropylene cones, also 140 mm, with the same voice coil and chassis type. This division of duties between the midrange-woofer and pure woofers allows bass extension down to 41 Hz (DIN), with a frequency response measured at ±2 dB from 54 Hz to 20 kHz on-axis, and up to 18 kHz at 30° off-axis. The crossover combines a 3rd-order electro-acoustic slope at 2 kHz with a 2nd-order slope at 700 Hz on the woofer.
With an in-room sensitivity of 94 dB (91 dB anechoic) and an impedance compatible with 8 ohms, the Monitor 7 V5 is easy to drive with modest power amplifiers: the recommended range spans from 15 to 180 watts, with a maximum input power of 130 watts. It therefore suits mid-range integrated amplifiers as well as more powerful setups, in medium to large rooms where a precise soundstage is sought for both music and film.

What to check before buying used
Check the condition of the foam surrounds on the woofers, which can dry out or come loose over time, and make sure there is no tearing on the tweeter dome. Inspect the cherry veneer of the cabinet (chips, discolouration, corners) and confirm that the protective grilles are present and complete. Testing at moderate volume allows you to check for any voice coil rubbing noise or distortion localised to one of the drivers.
