Description
The Kantor S4 is a 2-way floorstanding speaker with mechanical crossover filtering, manufactured in France by Pierre Etienne Leon. It is based on an internal acoustic loading principle called Cross-Flow, designed to structure wave propagation inside the cabinet.
The Cross-Flow system combines two acoustically coupled chambers with non-parallel walls, which regulate wave flow and balance the internal and external pressures generated by the midrange/woofer drivers. This architecture limits standing waves and the resulting sound colouration, while allowing an extended low-frequency response. The stated frequency response ranges from 29 Hz to 28 kHz, with a sensitivity of 91 dB (2.83 V/1 m) and an impedance of 4 ohms, for a rated power of 120 watts.
The tweeter uses a textile/silk diaphragm mounted on a wide, flexible suspension, paired with an aluminium wire voice coil surrounded by a powerful magnetic circuit, allowing it to cover the treble up to over 28 kHz with good spatial dispersion. The two 17 cm midrange/woofer drivers feature different diaphragms, one in polypropylene/carbon with a convex cone, the other in coated cellulose/fibreglass, each chosen for its neutrality and internal damping. Their structure includes an inverted pole piece cap made of amorphous material, a voice coil on a Kapton former with a copper ring to limit harmonic distortion, and a non-resonant, non-magnetic alloy chassis.
The cabinetry, made from high-density MDF veneered with real wood on the interior and exterior faces, receives a transparent satin varnish in a natural wood finish, with satin black or satin white versions originally available to order.

What to check before buying used
On this floorstanding speaker, the cabinetry deserves close inspection: the joints of the Cross-Flow cabinet, with its non-parallel internal walls, can come apart with age and compromise the seal of the two coupled chambers.
