PMC prodigy5

The PMC prodigy5 is a narrow two-way floorstanding speaker, designed to offer a transmission line load in a floor volume comparable to that of a bookshelf speaker on a stand. At 905 mm high by 165 mm wide (233 mm with the plinth bars) and 237 mm deep, it fits into rooms where a conventional floorstanding speaker would seem imposing, while still serving as the main speaker of a stereo system. Acoustic grilles are available as an option for those who prefer to conceal the drivers.

The top of the spectrum is handled by a 27 mm (1") PMC soft dome, connected to the woofer by a crossover set at 1.7 kHz, with a dispersion of 80 degrees both horizontally and vertically: the sweet spot therefore remains wide and tolerant of listening position changes. The woofer relies on an ATL transmission line with an effective length of 1.96 m, folded within the cabinet, which extends the lower register well beyond what the size of the enclosure would suggest.

This combination of 6 ohms and 87.3 dB remains accessible to moderate-power amplifiers, with the recommended range starting at 20 W, while tolerance up to 250 W leaves room for more powerful electronics to make use of the stated 123 dB SPL. Connection is via a single pair of 4 mm binding posts, with no bi-wiring to manage.

This model is aimed at the listener who wants bass extension worthy of a floorstanding speaker without sacrificing floor space: small or medium living room, shared living space, a stereo system that needs to remain unobtrusive. At 10 kg per speaker, they are easy to position and adjust for angle, and the consistent dispersion allows for several listening positions without the tonal balance collapsing off-axis.
