Description
The PR300 EVO is a stereo preamplifier from Atoll Electronique, a French manufacturer specialising in high-fidelity amplification. It succeeds the PR300 Signature and inaugurates the manufacturer's Evolution range, retaining the fundamentals of its predecessor while thoroughly revising its power supply and internal structure.
The power supply combines two 10 VA toroidal transformers dedicated to the audio stages, a 3.2 VA linear transformer for the digital stages, and a low-consumption 10 VA transformer for the control logic, all backed by a total filtering capacitance of 89,000 µF. This architecture aims for a stable and responsive power supply, a decisive factor for a preamplifier called upon to process low-level signals without degrading them. The construction adopts a fully symmetrical dual-mono structure, separating the left and right circuits to limit interference between channels. In terms of performance, the unit offers a bandwidth of 5 Hz to 100 kHz at -3 dB, a rise time of 1.3 µs, an input impedance of 357 kΩ, a sensitivity of 3 V, a signal-to-noise ratio of 100 dB and a distortion rate of 0.005% at 1 kHz.
The connectivity includes one XLR input, five line inputs (one of which can be configured as a phono input as an option) spread across AUX, CD, TUNER, DVD and TAPE, as well as a BYPASS input. The preamplifier can optionally receive a DAC card, DA100 or DA200, which adds 24-bit/192 kHz optical and coaxial digital inputs; the DA200 version additionally brings a 24-bit/384 kHz asynchronous USB input compatible with DSD up to 256, as well as Bluetooth connectivity.

What to check before buying used
On this dual-mono preamplifier, it is advisable to check the level balance between the two channels as well as the absence of crackling on the volume and balance potentiometers, a common symptom of track wear. The input selectors and RCA contacts should also be checked, as these mechanical parts are used every time the source is changed. After several years, the power supply's filtering capacitors deserve particular attention, as ageing can result in more pronounced hiss or hum.
