Description
The PR400 Evolution is a stereo preamplifier from Atoll Electronique, designed to drive a separate power amplifier stage within a high-end hi-fi system. It handles common line sources as well as a dedicated bypass input, useful for integrating a home cinema processor into a stereo chain.
The preamplifier relies on separate linear power supplies for the analogue and digital stages, with a total capacitance of 112,000 µF that contributes to power supply stability under load. What to check before buying used
On this preamplifier, it is best to check that the input switching relays work properly and that there is no crackling on the volume and balance potentiometers after years of use. The capacitors in the linear power supply, sized for a high total capacitance, deserve a visual check to rule out any signs of ageing. If the unit includes an optional DA100 or DA200 digital card, its dedicated inputs and outputs should be tested before making a purchase decision.
