Description
The Marconi is a line preamplifier from Brinkmann Audio. Its function is to select the source from among several inputs, adjust the listening level and prepare the signal so that it retains its integrity even after long cabling to the power amplifier, with no added colouration.
Volume control is entirely electronic and operates on two distinct levels. Each of the six inputs, two of which are in balanced configuration, has an individual, memorisable sensitivity setting, which avoids sudden level jumps when changing source. The volume adjustment itself relies on a motorised potentiometer, controllable remotely or via the front-panel dial, which digitally drives integrated circuits that then adjust the level passively, via discrete resistors, with a precision of 0.5 dB per step.
Signal processing is fully balanced: for a stereo preamplifier, this requires four complete amplification stages, with the signal processed both in phase and with a 180-degree phase shift. This architecture aims for the best possible immunity to external interference.
This preamplifier is intended for a high-end hi-fi system, where preserving the dynamics and precision of the signal between the sources and the power amplifier is a priority. The number of inputs and the presence of balanced connections suit an installation combining several demanding analogue or digital sources.
What to check before buying used
The motor of the motorised potentiometer can wear with age and cause jerky or noisy operation when changing levels via the dial or remote control. The relays that switch the discrete resistors should switch cleanly on each step, without crackling or level jumps. It is also worth checking that all six inputs, particularly the two balanced XLR connections, retain clean contacts and a working memorised sensitivity setting.
