Description
The N°320S is a stereo preamplifier from Mark Levinson, designed as a direct derivative of the N°32 Reference preamplifier. It carries over many of its characteristics into a single chassis, offering a portion of the brand's flagship expertise in a more compact form.
The signal circuit relies on 14 analogue integrated circuits and 14 switching relays, combining components from recognised brands such as Burr-Brown, Analog Devices and Linear Technology. The construction is fully balanced: unbalanced inputs are converted to a balanced signal as soon as they enter the unit, which explains the preference given to XLR inputs to make full use of this architecture, in keeping with the most capable balanced analogue-to-digital converters on the market.
Volume control relies on the Arlon 25N, a dedicated system derived from the N°32, which replaces the conventional potentiometer with a high-precision electronic circuit. This function uses Vishay Siliconix components known for their very low distortion and silent operation. Adjustment is made in 1 dB steps from 0 to 23 dB, then in 0.1 dB steps up to 80 dB, offering a level of adjustment precision uncommon on this type of unit.

What to check before buying used
The Arlon 25N circuit controlling the volume should move through every 1 dB step without any jumps, crackling or channel dropping out, which would indicate tired relays or Vishay Siliconix components. Each input should also be tested, particularly the XLR inputs favoured by the balanced construction, along with switching between the 14 switching relays to rule out any oxidised or intermittent contacts. An inspection of the internal chokes and capacitors is also worthwhile to detect ageing or electrolytic leakage.
