Description

The ML 326S is a stereo preamplifier from Mark Levinson, designed as a direct derivative of the N°32 Reference preamplifier. It retains many of its characteristics but combines them within a single chassis, whereas the N°32 spreads its architecture across two separate units.

The signal circuit uses 14 analogue integrated circuits and 14 switching relays, with components sourced from Burr-Brown, Analog Devices and Linear Technology. The design is fully balanced: unbalanced inputs are automatically converted to balanced internally, which favours the use of XLR inputs to make the most of the unit's topology, particularly since the best current analogue-to-digital converters are themselves balanced.

The unit incorporates Arlon 25N, a specific circuit board material developed for the N°32, used throughout all circuits of the ML 326S. Volume control likewise carries over the N°32's module: instead of a conventional potentiometer, it relies on an electronic system built around Vishay Siliconix components known for their very low noise and low distortion. Adjustment proceeds in 1 dB steps between 0 and 23 dB, then in 0.1 dB steps up to 80 dB, offering an unusually fine degree of control.

Power supply is provided by two separate toroidal transformers, one dedicated to the audio section and the other to the system's logic control, a separation intended to limit interference between control stages and signal stages.

This preamplifier is aimed at a high-end, fully balanced system, where precision of level control and signal purity take priority over ease of use. It will particularly suit an enthusiast wishing to recreate the N°32 Reference architecture in a more compact format, provided the sources and power stage are equipped with XLR connections.

What to check before buying used

The Vishay Siliconix volume module and Arlon 25N-based circuits are known to be reliable, but it is worth checking that the level control progresses smoothly, without jumps or steps, across its full range. The 14 switching relays warrant careful listening on each input, checking for any doubtful contact or a muted channel. Preference should be given to a unit whose XLR inputs have been tested, given that the unit's balanced topology places particular demands on these connections.
