Description
The Sonneteer Sedley is a phono preamplifier, that is to say a dedicated electronic stage placed between a turntable and an amplifier. It amplifies and corrects the signal from the cartridge according to the RIAA curve, an essential function since most modern amplifiers no longer include it. It is the first phono preamplifier model developed by Sonneteer.
Its main feature lies in its compatibility with the two major families of cartridges: moving magnet (MM) models and moving coil (MC) models. This dual compatibility is accompanied by a wide range of loading adjustments, allowing the input impedance to be adjusted precisely to match the electrical characteristics of the cartridge in use. This loading flexibility is a point that the specialist press has particularly highlighted, as it allows the sound to be optimised according to the cartridge model fitted, rather than making do with a fixed setting.
The Sedley was designed to complement the Sonneteer Campion and Alabaster amplifiers, sharing their minimalist approach. It can nevertheless be integrated into other hi-fi systems with a line input.
This preamplifier is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts with an amplifier lacking a built-in phono stage, or wishing to replace an original phono stage with a dedicated, adjustable model. It will particularly suit those who own an MC cartridge, which is more demanding in terms of impedance matching than MM cartridges.
What to check before buying used
Check that both the MM and MC stages work correctly, along with the stability of the loading switches, which are used every time the cartridge is changed and can sometimes suffer from poor contacts after several years. Listening to both inputs helps detect any abnormal hiss or channel imbalance, which would indicate worn capacitors or input components. Also check the RCA sockets and power connector, as wear can cause interference or intermittent signal cuts.
