Description
The EVO 100-4 is a valve power amplifier from PrimaLuna, designed as a gateway into high-end valve amplification. It uses the brand's in-house components and stands out for its ability to evolve from a stereo configuration to monoblock operation.
A switch located on the rear of the unit allows you to toggle between stereo operation and a monoblock configuration. In mono mode, two output transformers are connected in parallel, offering a choice of impedance between 2, 4 and 8 Ohms and allowing the amplifier to drive current-hungry speakers, such as planar or electrostatic panels.
The amplifier incorporates an auto-bias circuit that monitors the operation of each valve. Should a fault occur in a valve, the unit automatically switches to a safe mode and a red LED indicates the affected valve, preventing any damage to surrounding components. Sensors continuously analyse the characteristics of each valve and feed this data to an active circuit that linearises the output regardless of the condition or age of the valves, helping to stabilise power output and distortion over time.
On the transformer side, the EVO 100-4 uses toroidal transformers encapsulated in a metal enclosure filled with resin rather than standard transformers housed in an external case. This construction reduces magnetic radiation, which can otherwise produce noise that masks musical nuance, and also limits acoustic noise caused by internal voids within the transformer.
This amplifier is aimed at a listener wishing to explore valve amplification without compromising on component quality, with the option of upgrading their system to a mono configuration by adding a second unit. It will particularly suit those considering pairing their system with planar or electrostatic speakers, which are known to be demanding loads.

What to check before buying used
The auto-bias circuit and its per-valve sensors must be fully functional: a set of valves that consistently triggers safe mode or the red warning LED indicates drift in the linearisation circuit rather than simply a worn valve. Also check that the stereo/mono switch on the rear operates correctly, as well as the cleanliness of the contacts on the output transformers connected in parallel in monoblock configuration. Checking the base and seating of each valve in its socket prevents any poor contact when powering up.
