Description
The ProAc Response D28 is a floorstanding speaker that succeeds the D25 in the Response range, borrowing the architecture of its bigger sibling, the D38. It targets enthusiasts wanting expansive sound without going as far as the most imposing model in the series.
The manufacturer has carried over the same port principle and the same double-sided crossover from the D38 onto the D28, two elements that bring its sonic behaviour closer to that of the range's flagship model. This technical kinship allows the D28 to follow on sonically from the D38 while remaining easier to set up.
Compared with its predecessors, the D28 has been designed to be simpler to install and drive, making it easier to integrate into a hi-fi system without excessive demands on the associated electronics.
This floorstander is aimed at those with a generously sized listening room: it is capable of filling large spaces, but reaches its full sonic balance in rooms from 25 m² upwards. It therefore suits a spacious living room or a dedicated listening room, where its load-bearing capacity can be fully expressed.
What to check before buying used
On such a large floorstander, the woofer surrounds deserve close inspection: sagging or hardening of the surround affects dynamic performance. Also check the cabinet along its full height (corners, base, veneer finish) as well as the port fixing, and listen to each speaker separately to detect any tonal discrepancy between the two units.
