Description
The 6-Perspex SB is a belt-driven turntable from Pro-Ject, recognisable by its transparent acrylic plinth. This plinth rests on three height-adjustable TPE-damped aluminium cones and carries both the motor and the sub-chassis, in a construction designed to isolate the sources of vibration from the playback system.
The sub-chassis does not rest on conventional springs but on three magnetic fields, a suspension that avoids the parasitic noise usually generated by spring-based mechanisms. A supplied spirit level makes adjusting this sub-chassis easier. Drive is provided by a quiet AC motor, controlled by an advanced DC control that regulates speed stability and allows electronic speed change between 33 and 45 rpm, with respective accuracies of +/- 0.1% and +/- 0.06%.
The platter uses a sandwich construction combining a balanced medium-density fibreboard with a 4 mm vinyl layer, held by a screw-fitted metal record clamp, to limit resonance. It rotates on an inverted bearing with a stainless steel axle, ceramic ball and plate. The Pro-Ject 9cc Evolution tonearm, made of carbon fibre and tapered in shape, limits standing wave reflections; its inverted bearing rests on four hardened stainless steel points housed in ABEC 7 ball bearings. The tonearm overhang is 18 mm. The turntable is supplied with the Ortofon Quintet Blue cartridge.

What to check before buying used
Check the condition of the drive belt, prone to ageing and loss of elasticity over time, as well as the cleanliness and alignment of the three magnetic-field suspensions of the sub-chassis. The fitted cartridge should be inspected (stylus, alignment, wear) as it directly affects sound quality. Also examine the acrylic plinth, which is sensitive to scratches and micro-cracks, and check that the three adjustable cones show no play or creaking.
