Description
The Amp Box RS Mono is a monophonic power amplifier from Pro-Ject, designed to be paired or used in multiple configurations within a bi- or tri-amplification setup. Its compact format allows it to be placed close to the speakers or a subwoofer, reducing the length of power cables.
It delivers 125 watts into 8 ohms and 195 watts into 4 ohms, with a bandwidth of 10 Hz to 50 kHz (+0 dB, -3 dB) and total harmonic distortion of less than 0.05% at 100 W, ensuring a largely unaltered signal even at sustained levels. Its ECC88 tube input stage lends a slight colouration to the signal before amplification proper, while the SMD topology with short signal paths and optimised PWM circuits aim to limit losses and interference. The signal-to-noise ratio of over -100 dB (IEC-A) reflects a very low background noise level. It accepts an input via RCA or XLR, both in mono format, with an input sensitivity of 1.35 V and an input impedance of 22 kohms. What to check before buying used
The ECC88 tube input stage deserves priority checking: microphonics, background noise or loss of gain indicate a worn tube that will need testing, or possibly replacing. Also check the tightness and condition of the gold-plated screw terminals on the speaker output, as well as the proper functioning of the two RCA and XLR inputs. As the compact chassis heats up during operation, also make sure it has never been used in a confined space that would restrict ventilation.
