Description
The CD Box DS2 T is a CD transport, that is to say a player dedicated exclusively to reading the disc and transmitting the digital signal, without integrated analogue conversion. It sends a stream compliant with the Red Book format to an external digital-to-analogue converter, leaving the latter to handle the reproduction of the audio signal.
The chassis is designed to resist torsion, an important point for the stability of the optical reading mechanism. The servo system provides real-time scanning intended to limit jitter, that temporal instability of the digital signal which can affect the accuracy of reproduction once the signal has been converted to analogue. Three digital outputs are available: coaxial S/PDIF, optical TOSlink and XLR AES/EBU, allowing it to be paired with almost all DACs on the market depending on the connection favoured by the latter.
This transport is aimed at enthusiasts who already own a quality external digital-to-analogue converter, or who wish to acquire one, and who are looking for a dedicated CD source rather than an integrated CD player. It fits a modular approach to the hi-fi chain, where each link, playback, conversion, amplification, is chosen separately.
The design is part of Pro-Ject's DS2 range. Magnetic side panels in real wood (walnut, American apple or eucalyptus) are available as separate accessories and are not supplied with the unit.

What to check before buying used
Check the optical block and the loading tray: the lens can become clouded over time and the opening/closing mechanism may show signs of wear on some CD Box DS2 T units. Test playback with several discs, including CD-Rs, to spot any skipping or reading errors linked to laser wear. Also check the condition of the three digital outputs (coaxial, optical, XLR) as well as the chassis, whose anti-torsion rigidity underpins the stability of the servo.
