Description
The CD Box DS3 is a compact CD player from Pro-Ject, designed to fit into a small-format separates hi-fi system. It retains the same casing as the DS2 models, making it easy to pair with other components from this range already in place.
This player features a Texas Instruments PCM1796 digital-to-analogue converter, inherited from the characteristics of previous models. It offers two digital outputs, an optical Toslink and a coaxial, both in S/PDIF format, as well as an analogue RCA line output that replaces the AES/EBU output found on earlier versions. A Trigger input and output also allow the automatic power-on to be synchronised with other separate components in the system. The 3 mm aluminium fascia and steel chassis rest on damping feet, while a dot-matrix display on the front shows playback information; control is via the front-panel buttons or the supplied remote control.
This compact CD player is aimed at physical-media music enthusiasts wishing to build or expand a small-format separates hi-fi system, particularly those who already own components from Pro-Ject's DS2 range or who are considering pairing them with a Power Box DS Source power supply unit.

What to check before buying used
On a CD player, the loading mechanism and drawer are the first points to check: verify that the drawer opens and closes smoothly and that playback starts without errors or skipping across several discs. Also check that the dot-matrix display and the buttons on the aluminium fascia work correctly, as well as the presence and condition of the supplied remote control. Testing with a few different CDs helps confirm that the optical unit reads the whole disc correctly, including towards the end of tracks.
