Description
The CD Box S3 is a dedicated CD player, the first model in Pro-Ject's new S3 range. It plays CD, CD-R and CD-RW discs as well as Hybrid SACDs, with 1:1 binary playback precision, and connects to an amplifier, active speakers or an external DAC.
Digital-to-analogue conversion is handled by a Texas Instruments PCM5102A chip, capable of processing bit depths and sample rates of up to 32-bit/384 kHz. The disc insertion mechanism is designed for smooth loading, with playback starting after a few seconds. The aluminium chassis houses a 1.54-inch (4 cm diagonal) display with a colour inversion function, controlled from the front panel or via the supplied remote control. The unit runs from an external 9 V DC / 2 A power supply.
The RCA analogue output allows direct connection to an amplifier or active speakers, while the coaxial digital output makes it possible to pass the signal on to an external DAC for those who wish to handle the conversion downstream.
This player is aimed at CD music lovers looking for a dedicated, compact source that is simple to integrate into an existing hi-fi system, without resorting to a multi-purpose DVD or Blu-ray player.

The optical drive unit is the most heavily used component on this type of device: it is worth checking that the insertion mechanism operates smoothly and that the tray or loading system responds correctly each time it is used. A playback test with several types of disc (CD, CD-R, Hybrid SACD) will confirm that the laser reads all the stated formats properly. It is also worth checking the condition of the display and the responsiveness of the front-panel controls or the remote control.
