Description
The DAC Box RS2 is a standalone digital-to-analogue converter with fixed output, designed by Pro-Ject based on the architecture of its Pre Box RS2 Digital, from which it takes the DAC chips while removing the analogue preamplification section. It is aimed at those who wish to connect this conversion stage directly to an amplifier or a line input, without a built-in volume control function.
The unit is built on a dual-mono configuration using two ESS9038Q2M converters, with separate signal paths for the left and right channels. This dual conversion allows support for PCM files up to 32 bit / 768 kHz and DSD up to DSD512 via USB. MQA decoding is handled entirely by the hardware, with full software support for the technology. Eight different digital filters are available, including the proprietary optimal transient filter from the creators of MQA, allowing the sound character to be adjusted according to listening preferences.
The fixed analogue output can be switched between solid state operation and valve operation, the latter provided by four 6922EH valves. The output stage is of discrete, balanced design in both configurations. USB signal processing relies on a multi-core XMOS microcontroller with RISC architecture, supported by an Altera MAX II CPLD for signal resynchronisation.
This DAC is suited to a hi-fi system already equipped with a preamplifier or an integrated amplifier with a line input, for a user wishing to directly compare solid state and valve rendering from the same digital source. Its dedicated master clock output also makes it a relevant partner for pairing with a compatible CD transport via I²S connection.

What to check before buying used
The tube/solid state switch and the position of the four 6922EH valves deserve a listening check: microphonic noise, hum, or a weaker channel in tube mode indicates a worn valve or one poorly seated in its socket. Also check that the eight digital filters and hardware MQA decoding remain accessible via USB, as some units have experienced recognition issues depending on the installed driver. An inspection of the XLR and RCA connectors on the rear panel rules out any play or oxidation that could affect the fixed output.
