Description
The Pro-Ject MaiA DS3 is a stereo integrated amplifier that brings together the essentials of a system in a 206 mm wide chassis: the power stage, a digital-to-analogue converter, a phono preamplifier for moving magnet cartridge and a headphone amplifier. A single unit is therefore enough to connect a turntable, a television, a computer or a smartphone to a pair of speakers.
The stated power output is 2 x 70 W RMS into 8 ohms and doubles to 2 x 140 W RMS into 4 ohms, indicating a power supply capable of keeping up when speaker impedance drops. The digital section relies on an ESS Sabre ES9018K2M converter accepting up to 32-bit / 384 kHz, fed by a coaxial RCA input, two optical Toslink inputs and a Bluetooth 5.0 connection compatible with aptX. On the analogue side, three line-level RCA inputs sit alongside the MM phono input, while a variable RCA output allows a subwoofer or a power amplifier to be added. The headphone output on a 6.3 mm jack accepts impedances from 16 to 600 ohms and delivers 2 x 75 mW into 32 ohms.
This format is aimed at installations where space matters: a desk, a secondary living room, a narrow cabinet or a secondary system where stacking several components is not desired. It suits anyone who listens equally to vinyl, files from a computer, home sources via optical connection and music streamed wirelessly from a mobile phone, with the option of switching to headphones in the evening without unplugging anything.
Speakers are connected via 4 mm banana plugs, spade connectors or bare wire. Power is supplied by an external 20 V / 3 A mains adaptor for 100-240 V supply, and standby consumption remains below 0.5 watts. The chassis measures 55 mm high by 153 mm deep, 176 mm including connectors, and is available in black or silver finish.

What to check before buying used
With this type of compact integrated amplifier, start by checking the external power supply: its presence, its voltage (20 V / 3 A) and the condition of its plug determine everything else, and an unsuitable generic model can cause hum or dropouts. Then test each input separately, particularly the two Toslink inputs and the coaxial one, as well as Bluetooth pairing, since a faulty digital stage is not apparent when the unit is switched on. The MM phono input should be checked with a turntable, listening for background noise at high volume, and the headphone output by identifying any imbalance between channels. Finally, check that the casing does not heat up abnormally and that the remote control, often misplaced, is included with the unit.
