Pro-Ject MaiA S3

The MaiA S3 is a compact integrated amplifier from Pro-Ject, adopting the characteristic "Box" format of the Austrian brand. It combines an amplification function, a digital-to-analogue converter and a phono preamp within an aluminium chassis, making it the heart of a hi-fi system that is compact in size but complete in features.

The unit is built around a class D amplification architecture, delivering 2 x 23 W RMS into 8 ohms and 2 x 40 W RMS into 4 ohms: enough to drive compact or moderately sensitive speakers without requiring a separate power stage. The built-in converter, a Cirrus Logic CS4344 24-bit/192 kHz, processes digital sources connected via coaxial RCA, Toslink or Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX support, for wireless listening from a smartphone, tablet or computer. A 6.3 mm jack headphone output, compatible with headphones from 16 to 600 ohms, rounds out the feature set.

This model succeeds the MaiA S2, retaining its functions while adopting a new aluminium chassis.

Its inputs cover both analogue sources, with three RCA inputs and a dedicated MM phono input for a turntable fitted with a moving magnet cartridge, and digital sources such as a television or a Blu-ray/DVD/CD player, which then benefit from the onboard D/A conversion. A variable RCA output also allows connection to an active subwoofer or a second amplifier.

This type of unit suits a compact setup, paired with small or medium-sized speakers, in a living room or office where there is no space for a traditional hi-fi system made up of several separate components. It is aimed at a user wishing to combine amplification, digital conversion and phono preamplification in a single unit, without sacrificing connectivity.
