Pro-Ject Phono Box DC

The Phono Box DC is a phono preamplifier from Pro-Ject, designed to make up for the absence of a dedicated phono input on many current amplifiers. Placed between the turntable and the amplifier, it amplifies and corrects the signal from the cartridge before passing it on to a standard line input, such as AUX.

This model accepts both MM and MC cartridges, with a switch on the rear panel to change from one type to another depending on the cartridge fitted to the turntable. It applies RIAA equalisation, essential for faithfully reproducing the sound cut into a vinyl record, and relies on low-noise integrated circuits along with an ultra-low impedance output stage, designed to limit interference and preserve the dynamics of the signal. Its DC power supply has a standby consumption of less than 1 watt.

The Phono Box DC is aimed at anyone with an amplifier lacking a phono input who nevertheless wishes to listen to vinyl records in good conditions, whether with a turntable fitted with a moving magnet or moving coil cartridge. Its compact size makes it easy to install right next to the turntable.

On the used market, it is worth checking that the MM/MC switch on the rear panel works properly, as well as the condition of the gold-plated RCA sockets and their contact. A listening test with both types of cartridge, if possible, makes it possible to check for the absence of background noise or hum, which could be a sign of an earthing problem or a worn component.
