Description
The RPM 1 Carbon is a turntable from Pro-Ject, designed to offer refined listening right from the brand's entry-level range. It relies on a low-resonance chassis and a set of mechanical solutions intended to limit the disturbances that typically affect record playback.
The platter rests on an inverted bearing fitted with a ceramic ball, designed to reduce mechanical noise from the rotation system. Drive is provided by a 15V AC outboard motor, controlled by a precision AC generator paired with a DC power supply: this combination aims for improved rotational speed stability, a decisive factor for playback accuracy.
The tonearm adopts an S-shape and combines carbon fibre, aluminium and resin. This composite construction seeks to maximise the arm's internal damping and minimise its own resonances, which could otherwise overlay the signal picked up by the cartridge. The turntable also incorporates a magnetic anti-skating mechanism and a damped TPE counterweight, two elements that contribute to the fine adjustment of the cartridge's tracking force on the record.

What to check before buying used
Check the condition of the original or replacement cartridge, as well as stylus wear, which is often neglected by the previous owner. The drive belt must be supple and not stretched, otherwise audible speed fluctuations may occur. Also inspect the damped TPE counterweight, whose material can harden over time, and test the magnetic anti-skating mechanism to ensure it retains its full precision. The carbon fibre tonearm should also be checked, as an impact could weaken its composite structure without this being visible to the naked eye.
