Description

The RPM 5 Carbon is a high-end turntable from Pro-Ject, designed for audiophiles seeking precise, quiet playback. It incorporates several innovations from the higher-tier RPM 9 Carbon model, within a chassis engineered to limit the parasitic resonances that can degrade sound reproduction.

The platter, made of acrylic, offers acoustic inertia that helps stabilise groove tracking. It sits on a newly designed inverted bearing fitted with a ceramic ball intended to reduce mechanical rumble, that low-frequency background noise which can interfere with the quietest passages of a recording. Drive is provided by an outboard 15V AC motor, controlled by a high-precision AC generator paired with a DC power supply, a combination aimed at improved long-term speed stability.

The 9-inch Evo tonearm, made from carbon fibre, is compatible with both high-quality MM and MC cartridges, allowing genuine scope for sound customisation depending on the cartridge chosen. Its counterweight, damped with TPE, also helps eliminate unwanted resonances that could otherwise blur playback.

This turntable is aimed at a demanding vinyl enthusiast who wishes to take a step up in terms of background silence and mechanical precision, without moving into the brand's most expensive ranges. It will suit both attentive solo listening and an already well-considered hi-fi system, where the carbon tonearm will make the most of a quality MM or MC cartridge.

What to check before buying used

On the Evo tonearm, check that the TPE-damped counterweight has not hardened or lost its elasticity, which would unbalance the cartridge's tracking force. Inspect the acrylic platter for deep scratches or chips around the edge, and turn the inverted bearing to detect any play or unusual noise indicating wear on the ceramic ball. Finally, make sure the outboard motor starts smoothly and maintains a stable speed, with no audible hum at rest.
