The RPM 9 Carbon is a high-end turntable from Pro-Ject, the result of extensive research and development work carried out on the RPM range. It is aimed at listeners seeking precise analogue playback, with particular attention paid to reducing mechanical resonance and ensuring rotational stability.
The extra-heavy chassis rests on a CNC-machined MDF base, combined with resin-coated steel pellets, forming a sandwich construction. A specific thermal treatment and a carbon surface coating are designed to lower resonance levels. This mass-loaded chassis is decoupled from its supporting surface by means of magnetic feet, which limits the transmission of external vibrations to the cartridge.
The platter, made from polished aluminium, incorporates internal TPE damping and a vinyl surface layer. It rests on an inverted ceramic main bearing, designed to provide stable rotational speed and very low mechanical rumble. Drive is provided by an outboard motor fitted with an integrated switch allowing selection between 33 and 45 revolutions per minute.
The 9-inch Evo tonearm, featuring a tapered carbon fibre tube and an inverted bearing design, is engineered to ensure precise groove tracking, even with demanding cartridges. What to check before buying used
The fitted cartridge deserves careful checking: a worn or misaligned stylus tip will compromise the precision of the Evo tonearm. Also check the condition of the drive belt, which is prone to hardening over time and can cause rumble or unstable speed if stretched. Counterweight and anti-skating settings should be readjusted upon setup, as a previous calibration cannot be guaranteed after transport. Finally, examine the chassis's carbon coating and the magnetic feet: an impact could impair the anti-vibration decoupling this model relies on.
