Description
The Signature 12.2 is a high-end turntable from Pro-Ject, designed for playback of 33 and 45 rpm records with electronic speed change. It is positioned as a high-end entry-level model, intended to provide a stable mechanical base and precise groove tracking, without integrated preamplifier electronics.
The 12-inch aluminium tonearm rests on a 3-point pivot bearing, an architecture that replaces the single-pivot system of previous generations. This alignment of the three contact points reduces friction and improves tonearm stability during playback. The effective mass of the arm is 21.7 g for an effective length of 304.8 mm, with a 13.2 mm overhang, values that determine compatibility with certain cartridges and the geometric setup to be carried out during installation.
Drive is by belt and flywheel, a principle that limits the transmission of motor vibrations to the platter. What to check before buying used
The ceramic bearing and the 3-point tonearm pivot deserve a hands-on check: lateral play or a sharp noise when pivoting indicate wear that is difficult to correct. Check the condition of the drive belt, which is prone to ageing and loss of elasticity, as well as the magnetic decoupling of the platter, which should remain stable without perceptible friction. Finally, examine the tonearm alignment and the absence of play in the counterweight, factors that are critical to playback geometry.
