Description
The Stereo Box E is a compact stereo integrated amplifier from Pro-Ject, designed to bring together on a single unit the amplification and connectivity needed for a complete hi-fi setup. It houses a fully analogue preamp and a low-noise power stage, paired with a high-resolution DAC for playing digital sources.
Its output power reaches 2 x 21 W into 8 ohms and 40 W into 4 ohms (at 1% distortion), with a total harmonic distortion rate below 0.12% at 5 W into 4 ohms. The signal-to-noise ratio of 90 dB A-weighted and channel separation of 60 dB at 1 kHz reflect careful attention to signal reproduction. The 25 dB gain allows a good level headroom with sources of varying sensitivity.
Connectivity includes an RCA phono input for MM cartridge with earth screw, an RCA line input and a 3.5 mm jack input, as well as three digital inputs (two optical and one coaxial S/PDIF) for connecting a TV or CD player. Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX and aptX HD codecs, A2DP profile, allows wireless streaming from a smartphone, tablet or computer. An RCA subwoofer output and speaker outputs with 4 mm banana plugs, fork connectors or bare wire, complete the equipment.
This model is aimed at those who want to centralise several sources, turntable fitted with an MM cartridge, TV, CD player, smartphone, around a single compact amplifier, in a small-format hi-fi system or a room where space must remain limited.

What to check before buying used
The motorised potentiometer and the Bluetooth/input switching relays are worth checking: crackling when adjusting the volume or cut-outs when switching source point to a dirty contact. Also check the earth screw on the phono input, often oxidised or missing, and test the built-in DAC on each of the three digital inputs. Humming on start-up or excessive heat from the power stage in such a compact chassis may indicate ageing capacitors.
