Description
The Stream Box S2 Ultra is a network player from Pro-Ject, designed to add modern streaming functions to an existing audio setup. Rather than offering a new built-in DAC, the device positions itself as a universal gateway capable of driving any USB converter already in place, whether an older or high-end DAC.
Its principle relies on network connectivity: Ethernet or WiFi provide access to online streaming services such as TIDAL, Spotify or Qobuz, as well as internet radio via TuneIn. The device also supports broadcasting protocols such as Roon Ready, Shairport and DLNA, allowing it to integrate into an existing audio ecosystem rather than imposing its own software. The multiroom function allows synchronised playback across up to six devices.
In terms of connectivity, the Stream Box S2 Ultra offers two USB A inputs, a Micro USB B input dedicated to PC-Detox, a network input (Ethernet or WiFi), an optimised USB A audio output and an HDMI output for video.
This streamer is aimed primarily at owners of a quality USB DAC, older or recent, who wish to give it network capabilities without changing their entire chain. It will also suit users wanting to move away from a smartphone or tablet as the sole streaming source, or those looking for a multiroom solution compatible with an existing Roon system.

What to check before buying used
Check that the network connection (Ethernet or WiFi) is properly recognised and stable, as a faulty WiFi module is difficult to diagnose before purchase. Test the USB A outputs, particularly the one dedicated to the link to the DAC, as well as the Micro USB B input for PC-Detox, whose connectors wear with repeated plugging. Also make sure the network protocols (Roon Ready, DLNA, Shairport) work correctly, as a software update may sometimes be needed after a long period of disuse.
