Description
The Tube Box DS2 is a valve phono preamplifier designed by Pro-Ject to amplify and correct the signal from a turntable before it enters an amplifier. It is a dedicated external unit, designed to replace a built-in phono stage considered too limited or to equip an amplifier that lacks one.
The output stage relies on a valve, paired with polypropylene capacitors presented as audiophile-grade components. The circuit was developed by Dr Sykora, an engineer associated with Pro-Ject for the design of several of its phono stages. The unit is compatible with both moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC) cartridges, allowing it to be used with a wide range of turntables and cartridges without an additional external preamplifier.
The Tube Box DS2 offers a connection for two turntables simultaneously, with two selectable line outputs: enough to connect two turntables or switch easily between two setups without unplugging cables. A switchable subsonic filter is also built in: it cuts frequencies below 20 Hz, often generated by warped records or platter resonances, preventing them from unnecessarily straining the amplifier and speakers.
This unit is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts who already own a good-quality turntable and want to get more out of it, particularly those using or considering an MC cartridge, which is more demanding in terms of amplification than MM cartridges. The ability to connect two turntables also makes it a practical choice for anyone alternating between several turntables or wishing to compare two cartridges.

What to check before buying used
The valve is the element to check first: ask whether it is original or has already been replaced, as its ageing results in a loss of dynamics, more noticeable hiss or a muffled sound. The polypropylene capacitors in the output stage can also degrade over time and affect the neutrality of the signal. Also test both phono inputs and the line output switching, as well as the subsonic filter, to rule out any loose contact or connector issues.
