Description
The Tube Box DS3 B is a valve phono preamplifier designed by Pro-Ject Audio Systems, based on circuit technology developed by Dr Sykora. It allows two turntables to be connected simultaneously and switched between, with each input configuration memorised by the unit.
Gain is adjustable over a wide range from 40 dB to 65 dB, with an additional +6 dB when the XLR output is used, allowing the output level to be precisely matched to a wide variety of cartridges and balanced against other sources in the system, such as a CD player or a streaming device. Load impedance is continuously adjustable via a potentiometer, a solution that allows the setting to be adjusted during playback itself and its effect on the sound to be heard immediately, in order to find the optimal match with the cartridge in use. Load capacitance can also be set to one of the following values: 50, 150, 300 and 400 pF. A subsonic filter engages at 20 Hz with an 18 dB per octave slope. The balanced inputs and outputs, accessible via a 5-pin mini XLR cable or standard XLR cables, transmit the signal as two components, hot and cold, in order to reduce noise added during transmission. The valve output stage and polypropylene capacitors round off a design geared towards signal quality.

What to check before buying used
On a valve preamplifier, the lifespan of the valve directly affects sound quality: its condition should be checked, along with any signs of background noise, hiss or microphony, and replacement should be planned for if signs of wear are present. As the gain and impedance settings are controlled via front-panel controls, it should also be confirmed that they operate without loose contact or crackling when changing position.
