Description
The Xtension 9 Evolution is a turntable from Pro-Ject, designed to deliver the sound qualities of the Xtension range in a compact format under 48 cm wide, compatible with standard audio racks. It draws on more than twenty years of the manufacturer's experience in turntable design.
The chassis is made of metal-filled MDF, giving it a high mass intended to limit resonance. The turntable combines two design approaches: mass loading and a floating platform. The main plinth is decoupled from its base by magnetic feet, while the rotating platter reaches a total mass of 22 kg. This heavy platter rests on an inverted, ultrasonically machined ceramic ball bearing with magnetic suspension. The tonearm base also features a high-mass design and is isolated from the main plane by a sheet of Sorbothane®.
The tonearm accepts a wide range of cartridges, from 4 to 14 grams, offering genuine freedom of choice and scope for future upgrades to fine-tune the sound according to the user's preferences.

What to check before buying used
Check the condition of the inverted ceramic bearing and the smoothness of rotation of the 22 kg platter, as any play or noise here is costly to fix. Also check the magnetic feet of the floating plinth, which should retain their suspension without contact or friction against the base, as well as the Sorbothane® sheet under the tonearm, which may compress or deteriorate over time. Finally, the absence of a fitted cartridge is not unusual given the 4-14 g compatibility offered by the tonearm.
