Description
The Pro-Ject X8 Evolution is a high-end turntable, designed for demanding analogue playback use. The 300 mm platter, made of MDF covered with a vinyl surface, is belt-driven, with manual electronic switching between 33 and 45 rpm speeds.
The MDF chassis, available in a natural varnished wood veneer or piano black lacquer finish, is weighted with metal granules to reinforce its mass and inertia. The whole unit rests on aluminium feet incorporating repulsive magnets that make the chassis levitate, a magnetic decoupling principle also applied at the platter's bearing spindle, in order to limit the transmission of unwanted vibrations to the cartridge.
The tonearm mount is compatible with most tonearms on the market, allowing the turntable to be upgraded by changing the tonearm according to needs. It is supplied with a Pro-Ject Connect-It E phono cable, a dust cover, a record clamp and a counterweight, as well as a sub-platter with magnetic support and a transparent acrylic mat.
This model is aimed at audiophiles seeking a high-end turntable, capable of making the most of high-performance cartridges and a demanding hi-fi system, with the option of personalising the tonearm over time.

What to check before buying used
On this type of magnetically suspended turntable, check the alignment and stability of the levitation of the feet as well as the sub-platter, which can become misaligned over time or during transport. Also check the condition of the drive belt, which is prone to wear or hardening, and the condition of the fitted cartridge if it is the original one. Finally, make sure that the tonearm, often interchangeable on this model, is properly secured and operates without play or abnormal friction.
