The Concept 500 is a floorstanding speaker from Q Acoustics, designed for demanding hi-fi enthusiasts. It aims for refined and precise sound reproduction, in an elegant and contemporary format that fits into a carefully arranged listening room.
Its design combines low directivity, a wide bandwidth and a low impedance. This combination makes it more compact and easier for an amplifier to drive, allowing it to deliver its performance without being challenged by the speaker's electrical load. The intended result is a broad stereo soundstage, with an impression of width and depth close to that of a live concert.
The Concept 500 was born from a collaboration between the Q Acoustics teams, the Fink Audio-Consulting firm and the industrial designers at IDA. This joint work shaped both the acoustics and the aesthetics of the speaker, with the ambition of offering a product with carefully developed technology, in the spirit of high-end equipment.
This model is aimed at a knowledgeable listener, with an amplifier capable of fully exploiting it, and seeking a precise stereo image rather than simple sound volume. It finds its place in a hi-fi system designed for attentive listening, whether for music or in a classic stereo configuration.
What to check before buying used
The driver surrounds deserve close inspection: they can stiffen or crack over time, which affects bass reproduction. Also check the cabinet (corners, veneer, no signs of damp) as well as the condition of the connection terminals, sometimes oxidised on older units. A test at moderate volume across the whole frequency range can reveal any unwanted noise or localised distortion in one of the drivers.
