Description
The QED Reference Audio 40 is an RCA interconnect cable designed to connect an audio source to an amplifier or mixing desk. It is part of QED's Reference range, geared towards a refined analogue transmission between the various elements of a hi-fi system.
Its geometry is based on asymmetric twisted pairs, combined with an LDPE (Low Density PolyEthylene) dielectric that insulates the conductors. The OFC copper shielding aims to block electromagnetic interference, an important point when the cable runs alongside other equipment or mains cables. The plugs, shielded by ferrite sleeves and made from a zinc/magnesium alloy, also contribute to this protection against interference. The connectors are gold-plated OFC copper, a finish that limits contact oxidation over time.
The cable incorporates the QED Analoc locking system, designed to ensure a firm hold on the connection at the RCA sockets. Electrically, its values are 76 pF/m capacitance, 0.37 µH/m inductance, 0.072 Ω/m loop resistance and 0.0059 dissipation factor.

What to check before buying used
The ferrite-sleeved RCA plugs and Analoc locking must remain firm, with no play or free rotation: a connector that turns within the socket points to a loosened collar or a worn contact. Also check that the OFC shielding has not suffered any tight bends or kinks near the plugs, points where an aged LDPE sheath can crack. A listening test on both channels helps identify any crackling or level loss caused by oxidation despite the gold plating.
