Description
The Quad 3CDT is a dedicated CD transport, that is to say a player limited to the disc-reading mechanism and the digital signal output, without a built-in analogue conversion stage. It must therefore be paired with an external digital-to-analogue converter to deliver a usable audio signal. This approach follows a logic of function separation, common in hi-fi systems built around specialised components.
The unit plays standard CDs as well as CD-R, CD-RW and data CDs, with extended compatibility for FLAC, WAV, WMA, MP3 and APE files burned to disc. The digital output is via a coaxial socket or an optical socket, with an amplitude of 500 ± 50 mVpp under an output impedance of 75 Ω, values compliant with the S/PDIF standard. The sampling rate is 44.1 kHz, that of the original audio CD format, with no oversampling stated. The frequency response is given at -0.01 dB between 20 Hz and 20 kHz, referenced to 1 kHz, reflecting even reproduction across the entire audible spectrum transmitted digitally.
The unit features a backlit LCD screen and can also be controlled via the remote control, for comfortable everyday use.
This transport is aimed at a user who already owns an external DAC, or wishes to acquire one, and who is looking for a dedicated CD source rather than an all-in-one integrated player. It will suit a hi-fi system structured around separate components, where each link in the digital chain is chosen independently.

What to check before buying used
The disc tray and optical mechanism deserve careful checking: a worn mechanism or an ageing laser results in difficulty reading certain CD-Rs or CD-RWs, or even errors on data discs. Check that the tray opens and closes without unusual noise or jerkiness, and that the LCD screen and remote control respond correctly. Without a built-in conversion stage, the quality of the digital link (coaxial or optical) to the paired DAC also determines the final sound result.
