The Revela 1 is a bookshelf speaker from Quad, a brand known since 1949 for its ribbon transducer technologies. It combines a genuine ribbon tweeter and a midrange/woofer driver in a two-way configuration, designed for faithful sound reproduction at low to moderate listening volumes.
The True Ribbon tweeter is based on a thin aluminium foil placed within a high-strength magnetic field, through which the audio signal passes directly. This design avoids the breakup modes and resonances typical of conventional domes: the diaphragm, ten times lighter than a dome, accurately reproduces the harmonics and nuances of recordings. The 165 mm midrange/woofer uses a diaphragm called Reveal, a composite of wood pulp and para-aramid synthetic fibres, which improves damping and bass control while smoothing upper midrange resonances. The crossover frequency is 2.9 kHz, with a claimed frequency response of 54 Hz to 24 kHz (± 3 dB). Sensitivity of 86 dB at 1 kHz and a nominal impedance of 6 ohms (4.1 ohms minimum) allow use with amplifiers capable of delivering up to 120 W.

What to check before buying used
On this type of speaker, the midrange/woofer's suspension is worth a visual check: look for sagging, cracking or discolouration of the surround, signs of wear or exposure to humidity. The True Ribbon tweeter, more fragile than a conventional dome, should be examined closely for any creasing, tearing or deformation of the metal ribbon, which would irreparably impair treble reproduction. A listening test at moderate volume allows you to check for the absence of unwanted noise or distortion across the full spectrum.
