Description
The Aethos is a stereo integrated amplifier from Rega, designed to drive a pair of speakers directly without any additional electronics. It offers six RCA line inputs, a Record output with its associated link, as well as a Direct In input and a Pre-out output, allowing it to be integrated both as the heart of a standalone system and within a larger setup.
Its design adopts a dual-mono architecture, with a custom-made toroidal transformer and Rega K-Power filtering capacitors, paired with Sanken output transistors. The pre-amplification stage runs in Class A and volume is managed by a passive control, two choices that favour signal linearity. The Direct input, with a gain of 31.6 dB and a sensitivity of 840 mV at 50 kOhms, offers a frequency response extending up to 50 kHz (-0.5 dB), compared with 30 kHz (-0.5 dB) in standard mode. Total harmonic distortion plus noise is stated at 0.007%, a figure that reflects low colouration of the amplified signal.

What to check before buying used
The passive volume control and input switches deserve a test across their full travel, checking for crackling or channel imbalance. Also check the proper functioning of the Record output and the Direct In input, less frequently used day to day and therefore more prone to oxidised contacts. Checking the temperature of the aluminium chassis after an extended listening session helps ensure that heat dissipation remains consistent.
