Description
The Elex MK4 is a stereo integrated amplifier from Rega, designed to centralise the sources of a home hi-fi system. It incorporates a moving magnet phono stage, an onboard DAC with digital inputs and a front-panel headphone output, allowing it to serve as the heart of a system without additional electronics.
The class A/B power amplification circuit delivers 72 watts per channel into 8 ohms, sufficient headroom to drive speakers that are demanding in terms of current. Total harmonic distortion is rated at 0.005%, a level that reflects a highly neutral amplified signal. Frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 65 kHz on line input and from 15 Hz to 65 kHz on phono input, comfortably covering the audible spectrum with margin at the extremes. The built-in DAC, a 24-bit/192 kHz Wolfson unit, processes digital sources via an optical input and a coaxial input, while the linear power supply is separated between the analogue and digital stages to limit interference between circuits.

What to check before buying used
On an integrated amplifier of this type, the volume potentiometer and input switching relays are the first components to check in the event of crackling or channel loss. It is worth testing each line input and the phono input separately, as well as the headphone output, to check for background noise or intermittent cutouts. Checking that the built-in DAC works correctly via the optical and coaxial inputs helps confirm that the digital section has not been damaged by a power surge.
