Description
The Rega Fono MC Mk4 is a phono preamplifier specifically designed for moving coil (MC) cartridges. It sits between a turntable fitted with an MC cartridge and an amplifier, in order to amplify and correct the signal according to the RIAA curve before playback.
The input stage is built around a low-noise LSK389 FET from Linear Systems, in a fully discrete circuit. The high input impedance of this FET limits loading effects on the cartridge, which preserves the linearity of the signal picked up by the cartridge. Loading is adjusted via DIP switches located on the rear panel, with a choice of loading resistances (70, 100, 150 or 400 ohms) and capacitances (1000 or 4300 pF). Two gain levels at 1 kHz are available, 63.5 dB and 69.5 dB, to suit the output sensitivity of the cartridge used. Frequency response extends from 13 Hz to 100 kHz (-0.3 dB), with RIAA accuracy of ±0.2 dB between 100 Hz and 100 kHz.

What to check before buying used
The DIP switches on the rear panel should be tested for proper operation, as a dirty contact or a stiff mechanism can throw off the gain or loading setting without this being visible to the eye. Also check the condition of the input and output connectors, as well as the presence and correct operation of the associated Rega PS1 power supply, which is essential for the unit to work.
