Description
The Nd3 is a moving magnet (MM) cartridge from Rega, designed to be fitted to a tonearm compatible with its three-point mounting system. It stands as an evolution of the manufacturer's range, featuring an entirely new generator design.
The stylus adopts an elliptical profile in artificial polycrystalline diamond, bonded onto a round titanium cantilever, a choice that favours groove-tracing precision. The generator relies on symmetrical geometry combined with optimised pole spacing, designed to improve the balance between the two stereo channels and reduce crosstalk, which translates into a wider soundstage when listening. The coils, miniaturised and mounted in parallel, are wound with 38-micron wire over just 1275 turns: this construction lowers the generator's inductance and impedance, improving high-frequency reproduction. The body is made from PPS, a lightweight and rigid material, whilst the cantilever mount is aluminium.

What to check before buying used
The stylus, bonded onto its titanium cantilever, warrants visual inspection under a loupe or microscope to check for cracks, wear or misalignment, as this bonded joint is more fragile than a crimped mount. The cantilever's suspension wire, being very fine, can loosen or break over time or after an impact, which affects groove tracing and channel balance. It is also worth checking that the connection pins are not bent and that the measured output values remain consistent between the two channels before refitting to a tonearm.
