Description
The Nd5 is a moving magnet (MM) cartridge from Rega, designed to fit a tonearm compatible with the brand's own 3-point mounting system. Hand-built by Rega technicians, it belongs to a range developed over some ten years around a novel architecture using a neodymium magnet.
The stylus features a bare elliptical diamond profile, obtained through a grinding process from polycrystalline artificial diamond, which promotes accurate groove tracing. The generator is based on a symmetrical geometry designed to balance the two stereo channels, with an optimised pole spacing to improve linearity and reduce crosstalk, benefiting a wider soundstage. The miniaturised coils, mounted in parallel, are wound with a 38-micron wire over just 1275 turns, giving a low-inductance, low-impedance generator and improving high-frequency response. The body is made from PPS, a lightweight and rigid material, and the cantilever is made of aluminium.

What to check before buying used
The bare elliptical diamond stylus is the most fragile part of this cartridge: its condition should be checked under a loupe or microscope, along with any deposits or deformation that could affect groove tracing. The aluminium cantilever should be checked for any bending or previous impact. It is also worth checking that the PPS body shows no cracks at the Rega 3-point mounting fixation points.
