Description
The Nd9 is a moving magnet (MM) cartridge designed by Rega, intended to fit Rega tonearms thanks to its 3-point fixing. It occupies a high position within the manufacturer's range, with a boron cantilever and a diamond profile that set it apart from entry-level cartridges.
The boron cantilever combines rigidity with low mass, two properties that allow the stylus to track the record grooves more faithfully without the tonearm losing responsiveness. The diamond is cut to a bare Fine Line profile, a geometry that reduces the contact surface with the groove to pick up finer details of the recording. The cartridge features miniaturised parallel coils, contributing to a low-inductance, low-impedance generator, which is beneficial for high-frequency reproduction.
The nominal output voltage lies between 5 and 6 mV, a figure to bear in mind when matching with the phono stage used downstream. The recommended tracking force is 1.75 g, a setting that must be adhered to precisely when fitting to the tonearm.

What to check before buying used
The bare Fine Line boron stylus is fragile: check for flat spots or chipping under magnification and request the hours-of-use counter, as excessive use accelerates groove wear. The boron cantilever bends at the slightest impact, and misalignment within the cartridge body is often invisible to the naked eye. Also check the internal magnet suspension: sagging results in an output voltage below the nominal 5-6 mV and an unbalanced channel. Finally, ensure that the pins of the 3-point fixing are neither bent nor oxidised before fitting to the Rega tonearm.
