Description
The Planar 10 sits at the top of Rega's turntable range, just below the Naiad, from which it borrows its design principles. It is a belt-driven turntable intended for advanced analogue playback, supplied alone or paired with an Apheta 3 MC or Aphelion 2 MC moving coil cartridge depending on the configuration chosen.
The whole philosophy of the unit rests on the pursuit of a chassis that is both extremely rigid and extremely light. The skeletal plinth combines a Tancast 8 core with a high pressure laminate (HPL) skin, and the entire turntable weighs only 4.2 kg for dimensions of 420 x 315 x 125 mm. Added to this structure is a ceramic brace, a first for a production turntable from the brand, which serves as the mounting surface for the tonearm and the dedicated central bearing: the more rigid the area linking the tonearm to the bearing, the less parasitic energy disturbs the stylus.
The platter follows the same logic. Made from ceramic oxide, it is diamond-turned during manufacture to achieve precise geometry and carefully controlled rotational stability. It is driven by a 24 V synchronous motor, itself controlled by the external P10-PSU power supply. This serves three purposes: reducing vibrations transmitted by the motor, allowing fine electronic speed adjustment, and enabling speed changes without handling the belt.
The tonearm is the RB3000, the manufacturer's reference model, mounted directly onto the ceramic surface. This tonearm-bearing-platter combination is at the heart of the project: extracting a greater quantity of information from the groove than the brand's previous models.
This turntable is aimed at listeners who have already put together a coherent analogue system and who are looking for the most accomplished source in Rega's catalogue. It requires a phono preamplifier suited to the type of cartridge chosen, particularly in the versions supplied with the Apheta 3 or Aphelion 2, and a stable support surface: such a lightweight chassis benefits fully from a decoupled stand or shelf.

What to check before buying used
On this turntable, attention should first be paid to the central bearing and the ceramic brace beneath the tonearm: a poorly repaired knock in this area can compromise the alignment of the RB3000 without being visible to the naked eye. Also check the condition of the ceramic oxide platter, which should turn without wobble or chips on its edge, and test the regularity of the 24 V synchronous motor as well as the supplied external P10-PSU power supply. If an Apheta 3 or Aphelion 2 MC cartridge is fitted, check the stylus wear and its alignment before any extended listening.
